Tinie Tempah Ft Labrinth – Frisky

Narrative:
In Tinie Tempah’s video ‘Frisky’ we can see a conventional linear structure to the narrative. Tinie Tempah and Labrinth move and dance to express their moods and emotions towards the beat of the music. There is a somewhat conventional hip hop/ pop narrative dirusption and equilibrium as we can draw from the lyrics that the diruption is he loves women and can’t help but chase after several,’ feeling frisky’ whilst equilibrium is restored because psychologically he feels there will always be another so he needs not worry. T.T and Labrinth are the narrators in the video because they are singing and rapping but they are also participants because they are in the video themselves. To an extent it can be said they are observers because the storyline is to do with T.T and his personality.
Tinie Tempah has opted to go for an amplicated video not merely the conventional illustrative to play on the audiences voyerisms. His uses of a urban warehouse adds intrigue to the viewers imagination and where there are the women displaying themselves it does not portray how he became that way and and why.

Genre:
Tinie Tempah use of of intertextuality allows him to extend his target audience, therefore his fanbase. Although he has grime/rap roots his video incorporates elements of more mainstream features for example his clothing. T.T and Labrinth are not dressed in conventional ‘rap artist’ attire, with the exception for the sunglasses. He wears fitted clothing, including skinny jeans and blazers which would usually be associated with indie/rock.
However we can tell that the song goes beyound simply rap/ rnb and also includes elements of dance and even techno. It has a verse- chorus- verse structure with the beat incorporating fast sounds and heavy base of dance and techo with the continuous regular rap drum 8 beat.

Representation:
Frisky is a music video which includes the the typical ideology of male superioty over women. Women in the video are used as objects which add to T.T’s and ‘Frisky’s’ sex appeal thus drawing in attention from audiences. Labrinth and T.T are represented as these two young urban men who are extroversive and attractive. On the other hand the women are in alluring poses and and in parts of the video on with the lady on the wall- idolised maybe to represent their love for women and being promiscuous.

Media Language:

Mise en scene: T.T’s and Labrinth’s Body language expresses that of young urban exuberance which is conventional to rap artist. T.T’s egotistical persona and both artists lavish clothing also back up the idea of this expensive rap video with rebellious attitudes and stylish costumes. The women in the background represent their sex appeal to females and whichn draws the attention of both male and female audiences.

Sound: The videos very upbeat tune leans more heavliy to a mainstream audience. The tempo of the tune is relatively slow to introduce the the audience to the song, but as the song progresses we have the introduction of the base and this leads to an increased tempo. T.T also uses non diegetic sounds to match the lyrics on screen for example where camera flashes sounds are added to show his popularity and in the line ‘Take a picture’. In the latter part of the video we can hear the introduction of further upbeat fast techno music which broadens his target audienc e from that of rap. The diegetic sounds however come from T.T and Labrinth who sing in sync to the beat and converge a mix of low vocal rapping to high pitched singing to give a wider appeal in order to get further recognition.

Editing: Pop videos regularly take on similar editing to match the sound and Frisky is no different. In the beginning there is alot of cross cutting as the beat build between T.T and Labrinth and the speed of this increases in correspondence with the beat in order to build suspense before climax. There is an obvious input of fast editing to match the fast tempo of the sounds and this is backed up with various jump cuts and match cuts which adds lively abrupt movements to the buoyant sounds of the music. This is used especially during the climax of the video where the provocative ladies are shown and the music builds.

Camera: The very first shot is a long mid shot of Tinie Tempah this is an establishing shot as it introduces us to the artist which is very important for someone who isn’t very well known as of yet. Then we can see differentiating mid shots and close ups of Labrinth and T.T this is to yet again introduce the audience to the two main characters in the story. The same shots are used throughout the video and are the conventional long shot to show everyone in the video which may include T.T, Labrinth with background girls then a cut to a close up of T.T. This is repetitive through the video and stresses that they are the focal point. There is alot of steadi-cam and zoom action used in the video to connotes liveliness and enthusiasm in connection with the music.
Lighting: Is cleverly used in the video as the main spotlight is focused on T.T and Labrinth the musicians. We tend to see the background girls in the shawdow which shows their irrelevance and gives more attention to T.T. Because it is primarily a rap tune it is a darker setting to connote youth and a rebellious attitude, but however there is alot of artificial strobe lighting used to give the video the feel of an club setting; this is where T.T seems to cross the bounderies from rap towards dance with multicoloured bright lighting in his videos.
