(Question 4)

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In my own opinion I feel that me and my group have come together and produced an amazing piece of work with the music video along with each of our own digipaks and advertisement products.

This is a link to Vimeo with the audiences views, comments and ratings about my video but as you can see no one has yet rated or commented on my video so far, but I think that it is just because they have not yet found the video and been able to see it.

One thing that I think I could have done to make the music video better I feel is that I could have made changes to the way in which we tried to represent Keith Tyler as an angelic figure rather than people questioning whether he is either there or not.

Another thing I feel I could have changed is that I think I should have made the artist play the guitar during the music video to give continuity from the music video - the digipak - the advertisement.

(Question 3)

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Before we could begin to start our filming for the music video we  made an animatic storyboard to help our teachers see our idea about what we want to produce in our music video. We used Final Cut Pro and Apple Mac computers.

(Question 2)

How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?

For my audience to establish Keith Tyler as an artist and the creator of the song "Fix You" I have made a visual links between the video and ancillary products (digipak and advertisement).

I got the idea of my artist in a relaxed sitting down position from my music video above where the artist is casually sitting but without the guitar, which I have added to the digipak and advertisement products.

I have used a mild colour scheme for all of the products (music video, digipak and advertisement) so that the audience can make the link between each product to the artist, which promotes the artist "Keith Tyler". I have kept his attire similar to the music video so that the audience can again relate to the artists dress sense (visual link) also the artist wears black, white and grey in all of the products.
In the music video I do not have the artist shown playing or with a musical instrument but in the digipak and advertisement products the artist is holding a guitar and there are many musical instruments linked with the products, which if I could go back and change in the music video I would, because I think I could show better continuity.

(Question 1)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The main influences for the music video that I have produced are definitely the bands "The Verve and Snow Patrol".

I have selected Snow Patrols song and video of "Chasing Cars", because one specific part of the video attracted me to it with the singer standing in the middle of the street without a care in the world, I thought that this would be very effective in my video if I was to change the camera angle and speed up the motion of the video to go with the pace of the song at that specific point.

The Verve, Bitter Sweet Symphony. Watch more top selected videos about: Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve

I have selected the video of the Verve's song "Bittersweet Symphony", because the video is mainly about the singer walking without any care in the world so I thought that I would try and incorporate this in the music video with this screen shot relating to the videos screen shot.

To create an album digipak with cover to suit the genre of music that my artist produces I took inspiration from a number of artists and bands in the pop rock genre, which was a very difficult thing to find as for my album cover I wanted to have an image of the new and upcoming artist so that people would know who the artist was and to promote him even further. To find an album cover within the genre of music that had the artist on the front cover instead of just images of artwork was proven to be very hard. I took inspiration for my front cover and digipak from the artist and bands of "U2" and "Oasis".
 My front cover (Keith Tyler)
 Oasis front cover

U2 front cover
I was influenced by the use of colour manipulation with the images of the artist/band and how the artist/band had their music equipment with them or playing them in the image. In my front cover I wanted to incorporate the use of his musical instrument and I chose to the idea of my artist playing a guitar with a little but of colour manipulation with the use of simple writing so that the audience are not distracted and focus on the image as a whole, also I noticed that these images were not in a plain background and had some meaning to them so I chose to have my artist in a studio showing to the audience where he makes his music and how.

For the advert that I have made for the artist I have found inspiration from the advertisements of the albums from the artists of "Coldplay" and "Ryan Leslie". From the "Coldplay" advert I have been inspired by its layout of having the image on top of a black background and having the writing in the black background. From the "Ryan Leslie" advert I have chosen to take a look at his attire and the way that he has an instrument in the image with him.

I have incorporated how the audience can either obtain from shops or download from a number of sources by putting the logos of HMV, ITUNES and Amazon MP3. I included some ratings and the logo of the artists record company so that people would know who the artist is signed to.

I feel that I have developed and challenged the conventions of the genre by having my front cover of the digipak of the artist and not of artwork and having the rest of the digipak filled with images of different instruments that relate to the artists songs along with the advert for the artist standing out with the simplicity of it just like other artists within the genre have done.

Possible Digipak And Advertisement Photos

For my digipak and magazine advertisement images I am mainly thinking of using images of musical instruments that the artist (Keith Tyler) may use to produce his music with in a recording studio type atmosphere, but I have to promote the artist with images of him so that people get to know who the artist is as he is an up and coming new artist.

Images of possible images of (me) the artist with his main musical instrument (the guitar) and his clothing being mainly of trendy fashion with a hat, black vest and blazer, accessories, straight jeans and fashionable boots:

I will be using one of the images from above for my front cover with a little bit of editing to the photo.

Colour Scheme

The types of colours that I will be using for the design of my digipak and advertisement for the artist:

Colours:
- I will have no more than 3 colours so that I can follow the 3 colour rule:
- White for definate
- Black for definate
- Either the use of yellow, silver or another simple colour

Font

I have made a short list of different fonts that I plan to use to suit the genre of the artist on the digipak and the magazine advertisement:
 Fonts for Digipak and Advert:

- Sometimes it will be either bold or normal
- Readable
- Simple
- One part Arial
- Mainly Georgia
- Capital letters

DO and Don't

Below I will list what I can and cannot do when I create my digipak and magazine advert for the artist.

Do:

- Use clear font
- Use appropriate sizes for images and font
- Use clear photos that are in focus
- Use photos that are an appropriate shape for the page
- Use a layout that follows the rule of thirds for composition
- Use an appropriate type face that follow genre conventions and house style
- Be careful where you place the font, it must follow genre conventions and be clear from a distance
- Follow the conventions of the 3 colour rule and use colour that is appropriate for images, font and background
- Think carefully about how you use and integrate font, image and text and language (remember that placement of text next to an image will anchor specific meaning)
- Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioned: Barcode, Date, Copyright, Titles and Artist name

Don't:

- Stretch images, this will make them out of focus
- Use layer styles
- Use unnecessary effects. Any effects used MUST suit the genre
- Place text across the artist's face
- Use a font simply because you 'like it'
- Feel you need a separate photo on every panel - be creative!!

Analysis of Digipak

Analysis of digipak for The Editors

I could only find this image of a digipak for The Editors album "An End Has a Start" which shows the front, back and inside cover with the CD for the album. The front cover is of an old gasometer with an effect over the top of the image. The font is plain and simple for the name of the band and name of the album on the front cover keeping it simple. The back cover is black with just the names of the tracks, some relevant information, the bar code, record label, logo and website address etc...

The CD is yellowish, which matches the front cover along with the font and the inside cover is the same as the front cover but in black and white and some information over the top.

I chose to analyse this band and their album, because the genre of the music that they produce is the same of our groups artist Keith Tyler and I thought that I should think about having some sort of colours like they have chosen along with the style of font to go with the design of my digipak, which is another reason why I analysed this album.

Analysis of Digipak

Analysis of digipak for Snow patrol

I could only find this image of a digipak for Snow Patrols album "Final Straw" which shows the front and back cover for the album. The front cover is of a man and a woman linked at the arms walking towards the audience with the sunshine in the background coming over the trees. The font is plain and simple for the name of the band and name of the album on the front cover keeping it simple. On the back cover the sunshines though the grass showing that they have taken images from a park or something close to a park throughout the album and the colours have remained the same (bright) and the track listings are in white with a black background and some relevant information on the back with the bar code, record label, logo and website address etc...

I chose to analyse this band and their album, because the genre of the music that they produce is the same of our groups artist Keith Tyler and I thought that I should think about having the colours of the digipak bright and simple which is another reason why I analysed this album.

Analysis of Digipak

Analysis of digipak for Razorlight

The song my group have used to produce a music video for was "Fix You" by Coldplay. I have chosen to analyse an album called "Slipway Fires" by the band Razorlight, because the genre of music is very similar to that of our music video and artist. I took pictures of the albums digipak. I have taken pictures of the front and back covers and the inside of the album. I saw that the front cover is of all of the band members in each of the corners looking at the camera apart from the person in the top right corner who is looking at the main singer that is wearing a white T-shirt to separate himself from the rest of the band that are wearing black and the background is dark blue with the bands name and title of the album in dark red for their chosen house colours. I like this design for a front cover and at the moment I am considering it as an idea for when I create my own digipak's front cover. Keith Tyler (the artist in the video for my group) is supposed to be an up and coming new artist and needs publicity as he is not yet known, which is why this type of front cover would be a good idea for my design. The inside of the digipak is in the same colour scheme of the front and back covers to match the genre of music they produce. The CD housing for the album is different from the rest of the digipack, because it is in a grey, white and black colour theme along with the CD itself being in the style of a roman numeral clock pointing to the forth hour on the clock, which I think represents the number of band members that are in the band. On the back cover, they have included the essentials such as the bar code, record label, written and produced by, a website and track listings etc...
