Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin is a well respected director of music and has pointed out a variety of different key elements in music videos and many of these key elements in the different types of music videos are present (All music videos contain these elements), depending on the type of genre of the song and the main aim of which the record company/artist are depends on the type of element in which the video will focus on and they are as follows:

Having a relationship in which the lyrics and the visuals are connected together with the visuals illustrating, contradicting or amplifying the musics lyrics.

Having a relationship in which the music and visuals are connected by the visuals contradicting, illustrating or amplifying with the music.

Having a use of multiple close ups of the main artist or vocalist in the music video.

Having a genre related/connected unique iconography/style present in the music video.

Having inter-textual references to many other media related texts may be present in the music videos.

Voyeurism is often used and plays a major part in the modern day music video especially in it's relation to females and only sometimes with males.

Andrew Goodwin says:

A music video often is constructed with a link between it's visuals and the song along with the artist/band also relationships are built in the music videos between different characters.

The different and varied close ups in the videos of the artists/band gives them the publicity/representation that they require.

Voyeurism in music videos is used so that it can increase the videos attractiveness/appeal particularly to its male audience whilst inter-textuality is usually promoted in the humorous types of music videos produced.
