first production shots

Production Shots: Take ONE !

Changes:
The outfit our character Keith has got on isn't actually the outfit that was used in the video because it was a really cold day and he couldn't handle being in the cold weather without a jacket, so we had to change the wardrobe to suit our character as well as the video.
We kept in mind Coldplay's image of cool, trendy and quite dirty so we dressed Keith in a black leather jacket (an iconic Pop/Rock piece of clothing). Keith also had on dirty black Converse in one scene and dirty white Plimsolls in another scene, which we think are two footwears that fit the genre of our music.
Improvements:
Some things we were told to improve on at our next filming session were the amount of space between the top of the screen and the subjects head and to make sure out shots were in focus as a few of them came out quite fuzzy. Also as we were filming again, we had to keep in mind the continuity making sure things like the weather and our outfits were the same (except if we we're planning to change it).

Below are some photos from our 1st filming session:
These will all be in Grayscale in the actual video...

Our Rough Rough Cut Video !

Keep in mind this is our ROUGH copy
Enjoy :)

Here is a rough copy of Coldplay's Fix You:
There are a few changes that will be made to produce to final video, such as:
- Working on the lip sync hing making the pronunciation look clear and match the song
- Change the last few shots to the night time scenes at Chelsea Bridge/oxford street
- Work on the jumps to make the video flow smoother

vladimir propp

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp is a Russian literary analyst and critic.
In 1969 he researched over 100 folk tales and analyzed them using basic plot components identifying their simplest narrative elements. Below are 7 of Propp's main characters that feature in his theory's:
- -The Hero, Villain, Doner, Dispatcher, Princess, Father, Helper, False Hero.

Using some of these characters, I have found the video The Writer by British artist Ellie Goulding which presents the Princess character sing about her Hero. The narrative of the song is basically about a girl who would change anything and everything to be noticed by one particular person. The lyrics 'why don't you be the artist and make me out of clay? why don't you be the writer and decide the words I say?' is an example of how desperately she wants her prince to notice her.
The song seems to be very personal which makes the lyrics quite emotional. It isn't a typical 'love story' as the princess doesn't get her prince at the end. The video is a disjuncture as shes simply performing and walking around different scenes.

Propp then went onto classify four stages of narrative functions and called them 'spheres'.
 -- The 1st sphere: Preparation:
This can be where a member of a family leaves home, a prohibition or rule is broken, the villain learns something about the victim or the villain trying to deceive the victim and get possession of their belongings.
-- The 2nd sphere: Complication:
This is where the villain harms a member of the family, a member of the family lacks or desires something, or where the hero plans action against the villain.
-- The 3rd sphere: Transference:
Where the hero leaves home or is tested, or receives a helper or magical agent, the hero uses the magical agent, the hero goes on a mission or quest.
-- The 4th sphere: Struggle:
Where the hero is in trouble but returns to save the day.
Propp's theory allows me and my group to put more thought into our characters and their stories. Doing this will also go well with the narrative as the video has a thought about storyline.

Final Song Choice

Coldplay - Fix You

-coldplay-fix you from vitoria lordeiro on Vimeo.

For our final song choice we decided on 'Fix You' by Coldplay. When brainstorming ideas we opted on an illustration/amplification style video so that we can appeal to a mass audience but with deeper levels of meaning it gives the viewer more to think about.
There fore we felt that the song that will allow us to easily get this message across would have been Fix You. The origins of the song - Chris Martin writing it for his wifes (Gwyneth Paltrow) father who was sick - is already symbolic and the title of the song links to the lyric where Martin sings of strength in weakness and perseverence.
For these reasons we chose this song and we hope that we can conjure up a suiting video to match the power of the lyrics.

Shortlist of Potential Songs

Whilst doing our research we acknowledged that we may need to consider several songs in order for us to come to a conclusion on which would be the best for our group task.
The following are out potential list of songs choices and the artist who performed them;

Coldplay - Yellow
Coldplay - Fix You
James Blunt - Three wise men
James Blunt - Goodbye my lover
Soul II Soul - Back to life
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

These are the choices which we are considering taking up, and although Soul II Soul were an RnB group the rest of our artist and their songs are contemporary indie/ rock and pop and we deliberately did this to allow us a wider range of choices to input an amplification style video.

Letter to Coldplay's Record Company

(Parlophone Record Label)
To whom it may concern,

I am a student of A Level Media Studies and for my Advanced Portfolio I will be working in a group to produce a promotional package for the release of a new album track. I would like to request permission to use the band “Coldplay” song “Fix You” for this project.

The finished project will not be made available publicly and will be used solely for coursework purposes. The holder of the original copyright will be fully acknowledged in the finished project.

If you do not hold the rights for this song I should be grateful if you could forward this request to the appropriate persons or return it to me with the contact details in order that I might approach the copyright holder directly.

Yours sincerely

Review of research & planning blogging activities

Hello Group 16

Congratulations, I have voted yours the best group blog from set 4. You are the most up to date with your blogging activites by the deadline set and have also addressed the additional extension tasks that I set from lesson 2.  Below is a table that identifies what needs to still be done as a group and what you need to also include indvidually in order to be fully up to date.

GROUP 16
GENERAL COMMENT
·         Overall, you’re mostly up to date with the blogging activities – it’s evident that you have engaged in the research and planning and have thought carefully about the analysis undertaken.  But,  there are still some things you need to include.
·         Well done for doing the 2 extension activities I set – the still image analysis and analysing the representation of women in music videos – there is some very good, detailed work here.
Whole group needs to include the following:
·         Shots of potential locations – some reference to this in the pitch but there could be a more developed, stand alone section in the body of your blogs
·         Test shots for lighting and / or mise-en-scene
·         Letter from record company with copyright clearance
Keith
·         Up to date (except for ‘whole group’ tasks that need completing)
Rex
·         Shortlist of potential songs
·         Copyright request letter to record label
·         Video fo final song choice and justification for use
Nora
·         Propp – overview of theory & application to a pop video
